Perhaps a set of images can be provided for items. If no image is specified, the system should not display anything (or at least make an option to not display anything)
We do provide a set of items, albeit a very small one
You can always replace unknown.gif and unknown_shop.gif with the clear.gif from your root forum directory (they still need to be named unknown.gif and unknown_shop.gif, though)
