Sorry one last question on this, should I install the new addon version for 2.3 even though I'm still on 2.2? Will it work fine for my site or should I first upgrade the forum to 2.3?

You would need to upgrade to 2.3 in order to install the 2.3 version. It does not function on 2.2 or older.
